“It’s not that gay blood is it?!” gasped 50 year old Martin Rogers from his hospital bed. “Ehhhh. Fine, but only if it’s someone like Neil Patrick Harris.” Rogers is one of thousands of patients now forced to make the difficult decision between receiving a life saving transfusion of blood from a gay man or their untimely death. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the FDA changed the blood donor restrictions to allow more men who have sex with men to legally donate.
The move to lower the deferral period from twelve months to three was championed by GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis as “the best thing that could’ve possibly happened to our bank account with all of our fundraisers cancelled indefinitely. Sucking the blood out of queer men is how we thrive and will make a great first episode for the next season of Queer Eye.”
